How to collage

Are you new to collaging? I got your back.
Take a look at the simple steps below and create your first collage with me! 🙂

Collages are for everyone. All you need are just a few simple items.

If you don’t have any magazines laying around, you can start with collecting “waste paper“, which are typically paper items that would normally be thrown away. For example: museum tickets, coffee receipts, tea bag covers etc. You can either implement them into your journaling practice or create a collage that stands on its own.

One more thing:
Have you been told that you can’t cut straight? Me too.
Sometimes these sentences stick with us longer than they should. Allow yourself to let them go and remember – something that someone once said to you does not define you. Reconnecting with your creativity can be very beautiful and empowering thing.

1.prepare your essentials

I like make a cozy space first. I usually prepare a nice tea or coffee, clean the table, light a candle and maybe play some nice calming music. I personally always prefer instrumental music, because words can be distracting to me when creating.

You will also need: a glue, scissors and optionally tapes, pencils, crayons etc.

You will also need some materials (it could be anything from magazines, old postcards, wrapping paper, flyers from art galleries to posters, cards, tea packaging etc.)

After you prepared tools and materials you also need a base, which where you will be making your collage on. It can be thick white paper, inside of your notebook, but also a magazine page or a cover of your journal.

2. cut out pictures and patterns that catch your attention

You don’t even need to know why. Just let your intuition guide you. You can cut interesting background, specific objects, letters or whole words or sentences. When you have your cutouts, start placing them on your base paper and watch how they interact together.

You can also use cutouts as little frames and use them to highlight the images you want.

3. glue assembled pieces to your base paper

Not sure if the collage is ready or “correctly made”? Please know that there is no right or wrong in the collage world. Just try to move things around and see how it feels. Sometimes adding a small colorful line or turning pictures around changes a lot. Collage is ready when you decide its ready. When you feel like it makes sense to you. And remember, the goal is to play, not to add stress 🙂

Done gluing? Then you have successfully made your collage. Great job!

Pro tip: tearing the paper with your hands instead of cutting it creates really interesting texture in your collage.

I hope you enjoyed this simple tutorial and please know that I would love to see your collages! Share them with me or tag me on instagram ❤
